With the camping season fast approaching and in light of the COVID-19 virus, we would like to make you aware of our plans here at Ed Allen’s Campground & Cottages. All of these changes are being made for the health and safety of our guests and staff.

At this moment, we are still planning to open on March 27, 2020. Our office hours will change to 9AM to 6PM. We ask that if you are feeling ill, please stay home and plan to camp with us another time.

The office doors will be locked. Our bathhouses will not be open. All planned activities will be cancelled until further notice.

All business will be conducted over the phone and through the walk-up window at our office.

All self-contained campers will be welcomed with a pre-paid reservation made by phone at 804-966-2582 or online at www.edallens.com. All site information will be communicated to incoming guests over the phone or sent by email.

If you need or want grocery items that we have in stock, please call in your order. We will gather the items and call you back with a total. Your order will be pre-paid on the same credit card used to book your reservation. Pickup will take place outside of the office door.

All propane refills will be managed by dropping off your tank at our propane refill station (please make sure it is labeled). We will fill your tank, call you when it’s ready and charge the credit card on file.

We are taking these precautions so that we can enjoy camping season in full swing, sooner rather than later!! We thank you for your patience as we try to protect our employees and our customers from this pandemic.

Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water temperatures were in the high 40’s in the lower and upper lake and in the low 50’s in the backs of major creeks last weekend, but had dropped to the mid 40’s in the lower lake and creeks and the lower 40’s up the lake on Monday and were holding at those levels on Wednesday (3/27/2013). The lake level was a little over a foot above the top of the dam and rising slowly. The water was brown and relatively clear in the lower lake.

Blue cats were widely scattered in a variety of depths in the lower main lake. A mixture of sizes of crappies were in some of the staging areas outside some of the creeks, and have been in these locations for several weeks. Crappies and blue cats in deeper locations were hitting live minnows and drop shot rigs with small Gulp baits. Medium to large crappies were starting to accumulate in the channels of the major creeks and were hitting live minnows and trolled curly-tail grubs over last weekend, were mostly gone from the creeks on Monday, and were starting to return on Wednesday. The cold and precipitation Sunday night and early Monday apparently ran them out of the creeks again, but look for crappies to continue to accumulate in the channels and backs of the creeks during the next week or two if water temperatures rise again. Most bass and pickerel were scattered on mid-depth and deep flats in the main lake and were sporadically hitting live minnows, blade baits, lipless crankbaits, and plastic worms. Fishing with Capt. Conway, Hollis Pruitt had 24 crappies. David Botkin had 18 crappies.

Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water temperatures were in the low to mid 50’s in the lower lake and in the major creeks over the weekend, but had dropped to the mid to high 40’s on Monday. On Wednesday (3/20/2013) most main lake temperatures were in the high 40’s, with similar readings near the mouths of creeks and readings in the low 50’s on the downwind sides of the backs of the creeks. The lake level was about 12 inches above the top of the dam and relatively stable. The water was brown and slightly cloudy in the lower lake.

A few blue cats and some small to medium crappies were in a few of the deeper channels and deep winter holes in the lower main lake. Medium to large crappies were in some of the staging areas outside some of the creeks. Crappies and blue cats in these deeper locations were hitting live minnows and drop shot rigs with small Gulp baits. Larger crappies were starting to accumulate in the channels of the major creeks and were hitting live minnows and trolled curly-tail grubs over the weekend, were gone from the creeks on Monday, and a few were back in the creeks today (Wednesday). The cold and precipitation Wednesday night and Thursday may run them out again, but look for crappies to return to the creeks and continue to accumulate in the channels and backs of the creeks during the next week or two if water temperatures rise again. Most bass and pickerel were scattered on mid-depth and deep flats in the main lake and were hitting live minnows, blade baits, lipless crankbaits, and plastic worms. A few small to medium bass and an occasional small yellow perch or pickerel were in the major creeks and were hitting live minnows and small suspending jerkbaits. Fishing with Capt. Conway, Pierre LaFrance had 10 crappies and 1 blue cat. Tom Porter had 18 crappies, 2 white perch, 2 blue cats, and 1 bass.

The lake level was about 18 inches above the top of the dam and slowly falling. The water was brown and slightly cloudy in the lower lake.

Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water temperatures were in the low 40’s in the lower lake and low to mid 40’s in the major creeks on Monday (3/4/2013). The snow today (Wednesday) will drop the water temperature substantially, but the temperature will rise again next week. The lake level was about 8 inches above the top of the dam. The water was brown and moderately cloudy in the lower lake.

Most fish appeared to have left the deeper channels and deep winter holes in the lower main lake, although a few fish remained associated with some deep wood cover. A few crappies and some bass were on brushpiles and other wood cover in mid-depths (6-12 feet) and when active were hitting live minnows. A few crappies had started to filter into the backs of the major creeks on sunny days last week, but were not in evidence on this past Monday. Look for them to accumulate in the channels and backs of the creeks during the next week or two if water temperatures rise again after the snow and cold front today. Conway, Hollis Pruitt had 4 bass.
