Chickahominy Lake Fishing Report – April 13, 2011

Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of
Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water
temperatures were in the mid 60’s in the lower lake and the upper 60’s up
some of the creeks on Wednesday. The lake level was a few inches above the
top of the dam and the water was stained but not muddy. A few nice yellow
perch were scattered on the mid-depth flats in the main lake and up some of
the creeks. Numerous crappie and a few decent pickerel and bass were in the
major creeks. Small crappie were still in the creek channels, but the
larger crappie were in the spawning areas. Males were quite dark and tight
to cover, while females were either mixed in with the males or holding in
slightly deeper water near the spawning areas. Wright Bait Co. and Southern
Pro two inch curly tail grubs, tubes, stingers, marabou crappie jigs, small
swim baits, suspending jerk baits, and live minnows have been the most
effective baits. Fishing with Capt. Conway, Ted Antol and Steve Benham had
10 crappie, 3 bluegill, 1 white perch, 1 bass, and 1 pickerel. Hollis
Pruitt and Malcolm Turnbull had 19 crappie, 10 bluegill, 4 yellow perch, 6
pickerel, and 3 bass.
