Chickahominy Lake Fishing Report – May 31, 2017

Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of
Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water
temperatures were in the high 70’s to low 80’s in the main lake and in the
major creeks on Wednesday (5/31/2017). The lake level was about eight
inches above the top of the dam. The water was light brown and relatively
clear in the central lower lake.

Most blue cats and bullheads were on flats in the main lake and scattered in
creeks, and were hitting live minnows and cut bait. Crappie were on
mid-depth flats and wood cover, especially near creek mouths, and along
shorelines and on shallow flats. Active crappie were hitting live minnows,
Wright Bait Co. and Southern Pro curlytail jigs, small tubes, Kalin crappie
scrubs, and small swim baits. Yellow perch were scattered or in loose
aggregates in creeks and on flats in the main lake and were hitting live
minnows, small swim baits, and small jigs. Bluegill and shellcracker were
scattered or in small loose schools on shoreline flats in the main lake and
some major creeks and were hitting small jigs, Nikko nymphs, small swim
baits, and live worms. Watch for another possible bluegill spawn around the
full moon on June 9. Some bass were on flats, along drop-offs, or in
channels in the major creeks and the main lake, while other bass were on
shorelines. Pickerel were still in many creeks or in the main lake,
usually on shorelines or around wood cover or vegetation. When active, bass
and pickerel were hitting live minnows, spinnerbaits, swim baits, stick
worms, crank baits, jerk baits, and jigs.

Fishing with Capt. Conway, Gerald Davis had 25 bluegill, 3 shellcracker, 1
roach minnow, 4 crappie, and 5 bass. Mitch and Steve Novak had 25 bluegill,
3 shellcracker, 2 crappie, 1 warmouth, 1 blue cat, and 3 bass. Carolyn
Conway had 27 bluegill. Tom Porter had 41 bluegill, 4 crappie, and 5 white
perch.
