Chickahominy Lake Fishing Report – May 2, 2012

Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day main lake water temperatures were in the high 60’s to low 70’s on Wednesday. Temperatures up the creeks were in the mid 70’s. The lake level was about 6 inches above the top of the dam. The water was dark but not muddy.

A few crappies were scattered up the major creeks, but most crappies and a few white perch were around the creek mouths and on mid-depth wood cover in the main lake. Crappies and white perch were hitting live minnows, Wright Bait Co. and Southern Pro curlytail jigs and tubes, small swimbaits, and Kalin crappie scrubs. Some bluegill were in the creeks, but many bluegill were around shorelines and wood cover in mid-depths in the main lake. Bluegill were hitting curlytail jigs, small swimbaits, Kalin crappie scrubs, and small spoons. A few pickerel were around the pad beds at the upper ends of the major creeks, scattered in creek channels down to the creek mouths, and on main lake flats. Pickerel were primarily hitting spoons and live minnows. Bass were scattered, with some next to the shoreline vegetation up the side creeks and others along the shorelines and mid-depths in the main lake. Bass were hitting live minnows, creature baits, soft plastic stick baits, and plastic worms.

Fishing with Capt. Conway, Capt. Bill Buck had 16 crappie, 17 bluegill, 1 shellcracker, 5 white perch, 1 yellow perch, 1 pickerel, and 3 bass.
