Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of
Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water
temperatures were in the mid 70’s in the lower lake and the high 70’s up
some of the creeks on Wednesday. The lake level was a few inches above the
top of the dam and the water was stained but not muddy. A few nice yellow
perch were still scattered on the mid-depth flats in the main lake and up
some of the creeks. Moderate numbers of crappie, bluegills, and pickerel
and a few bass were in the major creeks. Post-spawn crappie were scattered
in the creeks from the spawning areas down to the creek mouths, with most
fish in the channels and a few along the shoreline. Wright Bait Co. and
Southern Pro two inch curly tail grubs, tubes, stingers, marabou crappie
jigs, small swim baits, suspending jerk baits, and live minnows have been
the most effective baits. Fishing with Capt. Conway, James Marable had 13
crappie, 15 bluegill, 1 shellcracker, 7 pickerel, and 4 bass. Tom and Adam
Anderson had 22 crappie, 4 bluegill, 1 yellow perch, 2 gizzard shad, 15
pickerel, and 3 bass.
