Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of
Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water
temperatures were in the high 40’s to low 50’s in the upper and lower lake
and up some of the creeks on Wednesday. This was down about 10 degrees from
late last week. The lake level was a few inches above the top of the dam
and the water was stained but not muddy. A few nice yellow perch were
scattered on the mid-depth flats in the main lake and the major creeks.
Numerous crappie and a few nice pickerel and bass were in the major creeks.
Most of the crappie were still in the creek channels and were moving around
frequently, and many of them had dropped well down the creeks from where
they were last week. Wright Bait Co. two inch curly tail grubs, tubes,
stingers, marabou crappie jigs, suspending jerk baits, and live minnows have
been the most effective baits. Fishing with Capt. Conway, Ted Antol and Jim
Atkinson had 5 crappie, 3 yellow perch, 6 pickerel, and 2 bass. Hollis
Pruitt had 16 crappie, 5 bass, 7 pickerel, 2 bluegill, and 1 turtle.
