Chickahominy Lake Report – July 29, 2026

Art Conway (804-514-1486) out of Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that
on Wednesday July 29, Chickahominy Lake mid-day surface water
temperatures in the lower lake were in the upper 70’s, representing a
drop from last week. The lake level was about 7 inches above the top of
the dam, up from last week. The water was medium brown, clear from the
surface to about 1 foot, but much more murky for several feet below 2 or
3 feet, apparently due to an algal layer.

A few blue cats, channel cats, and bullheads were scattered in deeper
regions of channels in the main lake, but some were in some creeks and
on flats. Moderate numbers of crappies were on main lake channel-edge
wood cover, especially near creek mouths. Moderate numbers of bluegills
and a few shellcrackers were in scattered patches on main lake shoreline
flats, frequently associated with traditional spawning areas. A few
pickerel and bass have been in creek channels, on channel edge flats,
and on channel-edge brush piles.

Shallows in many areas in creeks and in some main lake areas were
becoming difficult to fish due to numerous clumps of filamentous algae
floating at or near the surface. Many areas had similar algae coating
the bottom.

For bluegills, red wiggler worms under a bobber on spinning rods and
dragonfly nymph wet flies on fly rods have both been effective. For
crappies, small minnows under bobbers have been most effective.

temperatures in the lower lake were in the upper 80’s. The lake level
was a few inches above the top of the dam. The water was medium brown,
clear from the surface to about 1 foot, but much more murky for several
feet below 2 or 3 feet, apparently due to an algal layer.

Jerry Davis and I caught 27 bluegills and 1 channel cat, all on fly
rods. Steve Haley, Garry Kwist, and I caught 25 bluegills, 21 crappies,
1 white perch, and 1 blue cat.
Sandra Rothrock and I caught 18 bluegills, 2 shellcrackers, 13 crappies,
2 yellow perch, 1 blue cat, and 1 largemouth bass.

For bluegills, red wiggler worms under a bobber on spinning rods and
dragonfly nymph wet flies on fly rods were both effective. For
crappies, small minnows under bobbers were most effective.

temperatures in the lower lake were in the middle 80’s. The lake level
was a few inches above the top of the dam. The water was medium brown,
clear from the surface to about 1 foot, but much more murky for several
feet below 2 or 3 feet, apparently due to an algal layer. Several areas
also had numerous small algal colonies adhering to the surface and in
the 6 inches below the surface.

A few blue cats, channel cats, and bullheads were scattered in deeper
regions of channels in the main lake, but some were in some creeks and
on flats. Moderate numbers of crappies were on main lake channel-edge
wood cover, especially near creek mouths. Moderate numbers of bluegills
and shellcrackers were in scattered patches on main lake shoreline
flats, frequently associated with traditional spawning areas. A few
pickerel and bass have been in creek channels, on channel edge flats,

Garry Kwist, Steve Haley, and I caught 14 bluegills, 17 crappies, and 1
largemouth bass. Wayne Dementi, Austin Warner, Brian Dementi, and I
caught 14 crappies, 2 white perch, and 1 largemouth bass.

becoming difficult to fish due to numerous clumps of filamentous algae
floating at or near the surface.

Despite the very annoying wind gusts Monday, Ron Floor and his grandson
Mick Gregeris and I caught 11 bluegills, 1 shellcracker, and largemouth
bass while fishing several shoreline areas in the main lake. Tom Porter
and I caught 17 bluegills, 2 shellcrackers, 14 crappies, 2 white perch,
and 2 largemouth bass.

For bluegills, red wiggler worms under a bobber on spinning rods and
dragonfly nymph wet flies on fly rods were equally effective. For
crappies, minnows under bobbers were most effective.

Alice Anne Potts and her Mom and I caught 40 bluegills, 1 shellcracker,
1 yellow perch, and 2 nice largemouth bass while fishing several

effective.

Ron Floor and I caught 11 crappies, 2 white perch, and a 4-pound
largemouth bass on small minnows. Dave and Jack Pong and I caught 63
bluegills, 1 shellcracker, 2 crappies, 1 white perch, and 2 largemouth
bass on flies. Tom Porter and I caught 14 bluegills, 3 shellcrackers,
and 1 largemouth bass on flies, and 26 crappies and 3 white perch on
small minnows.

Bill Schultz caught 12 bluegills, 10 shellcrackers, and 1 largemouth
bass on red wigglers. Robert Thomas and Mike Snider caught 32
bluegills, 2 yellow perch, and 4 largemouth bass on flies.
