Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of
Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water
temperatures were in the low to mid 70’s in the lower lake and up some of
the creeks last weekend. The lake level was six to eight inches above the
top of the dam and the water was stained but not muddy. There was very
little action in the major creeks. Bass and some pickerel were around the
creek mouth areas and on nearby flats. Bluegill, yellow perch, white perch,
blue cats, and a few larger crappie were scattered over the shallow to
mid-depth flats in the lower and middle regions of the main lake. There
were small aggregations of bluegill in the neighborhoods of several of the
traditional spawning areas. Wright Bait Co. and Southern Pro one and two
inch curly tail grubs, tubes, stingers, marabou crappie jigs, small swim
baits, suspending jerk baits, and live minnows have been the most effective
baits. Fishing with Capt. Conway, Malcolm Turnbull had 19 bluegill, 1
crappie, 3 yellow perch, 1 pickerel, and 3 bass.
