Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of
Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water
temperatures were in the low 70’s in the lower lake and up some of the
creeks on Wednesday. The lake level was a few inches above the top of the
dam and the water was stained but not muddy. A few nice yellow perch were
still scattered on the shallow to mid-depth flats in the main lake and up
some of the creeks. Moderate numbers of crappie, bluegills, and pickerel
and a few bass were in the major creeks. Crappie were scattered in the
creeks from the spawning areas down to the creek mouths, with most fish in
the channels and a few along the shoreline. Bluegills, yellow perch, white
perch and larger crappie were scattered over the shallow to mid-depth flats
in the lower and middle regions of the main lake. Wright Bait Co. and
Southern Pro one and two inch curly tail grubs, tubes, stingers, marabou
crappie jigs, small swim baits, suspending jerk baits, and live minnows have
been the most effective baits. Fishing with Capt. Conway, Hollis Pruitt had
21 crappie, 14 bluegill, 5 white perch, 1 yellow perch, 1 pickerel, 1 bass,
and 1 gizzard shad. Malcolm Turnbull had 5 crappie, 11 bluegill, 13 white
perch, 2 yellow perch, 5 pickerel, and 1 bass.
