Chickahominy Lake Fishing Report – April 23,

Art Conway (804-514-1486) out of Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that
Chickahominy Lake mid-day surface water was in the low 70’s in the lower
region of the main lake and in the major creeks on Wednesday
(4/23/2025). Water levels below 10 feet in the main lake were in the
low 60’s, so the mixing of water layers seen recently has apparently not
continued through the hotter weather early this week. The lake level
was about 1 or 2 inches above the top of the dam. The water was light to
medium brown, clear to slightly murky in the upper 2 feet, and murky
below 3 feet due to an apparent layer of suspended microscopic algae.

A few blue cats, channel cats, and bullheads were still scattered on
flats, along drop-offs, and primarily in deeper regions of channels in
the main lake, but no large groups were observed. Small and
middle-sized and occasional large crappies were in creek channels,
primarily as scattered single fish or small groups. Larger crappies
that had been spawning on wood and lily pads in the upper regions of
major creeks have left the creeks and some larger crappies were spawning
on cypress trees in creek mouths and the main lake. Crappies in creek
channels were hitting slow (0.2 to 0.5 mph) trolled minnows or faster (1
to 3 mph) trolled curly-tail grubs. Some bluegills and shellcrackers
were in creeks on flats after warmer days. A few scattered pickerel and
small bass were in creek channels or on flats.

Fishing with Art Conway, Sandra Rothrock caught 5 bluegills, 2
shellcrackers, 7 crappies, 2 white perch, and 1 largemouth bass.
