Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water temperatures were in the low to mid 60’s in the lower main lake and in the mid 60’s in the major creeks on Wednesday (04/16/2014). The lake level was a little over a foot above the top of the dam. The water was medium brown and moderately cloudy in the central lower lake.
Blue cats were scattered throughout the lake and up the creeks. Moderate numbers of small to medium crappie were in the channels of the major creeks, and some were on mid-depth wood cover in the main lake. Crappie were hitting live minnows, Kalin crappie scrubs, Wright Bait Co. curly-tail grubs, small swim baits, and small suspending jerkbaits. Some bass and pickerel were on mid-depth flats and in the main channels in the major creeks and were hitting live minnows, small swim baits, and suspending jerk baits. A few yellow perch, bluegill, shellcracker, and flier were wandering in the creeks and were hitting live minnows and small jigs.
Fishing with Capt. Conway, Matt and Lily Ohlschlager and Robert and Ann Chappell had 7 crappie, 2 pickerel, and 1 bass. Craig Kinsley and Gary Lambert had 12 crappie, 1 bluegill, 1 shellcracker, and 2 bass. Ross Alfonso, Ryan Ladd, and Joseph DuVal had 20 crappie and 1 bluegill. Tom Porter had 29 crappie, 1 flier, 1 yellow perch, and 1 pickerel.
