Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water temperatures were in the low 70’s in the lower lake and in the major creeks over the weekend, but had dropped to the mid 60’s by Wednesday. The lake level was a few inches above the top of the dam. The water was dark and a bit cloudy in most areas, but not really muddy.

A few crappies were scattered up the major creeks, but most crappies and a few white perch were around the creek mouths and on mid-depth wood cover in the main lake. Crappies and white perch were hitting live minnows, Wright Bait Co. and Southern Pro curlytail jigs and tubes, small swimbaits, and Kalin crappie scrubs. Some bluegills were in the creeks, primarily around vegetation, and hitting curlytail jigs, small swimbaits, and small spoons. A few pickerel were around the pad beds at the upper ends of the major creeks and in creek channels and were primarily hitting live minnows. Bass were next to the shoreline vegetation up the side creeks and were hitting soft plastic stick baits and plastic worms.

Fishing with Capt. Conway, Hollis Pruitt and Malcolm Turnbull had 21 crappie, 15 bluegill, 2 shellcracker, 1 white perch, 1 pickerel, and 2 bass. Bob and Evie McCuen had 10 crappie, 10 white perch, 2 bluegill, 1 shellcracker, 1 pickerel, and 1 bass.
