Art Conway (804-514-1486) out of Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that
Chickahominy Lake mid-day surface water temperatures were in the middle
to upper 80’s in the central lower lake on Tuesday (8/16/2023), with
water below 5 feet in the lower 80’s. The lake level was about even
with the top of the dam. The water was light brown, clear in the top 1
foot, moderately cloudy for the next foot, and quite cloudy for the next
several feet in the central lower lake.
A few small blue cats, channel cats, and bullheads were scattered on
flats, along drop-offs, and in channels in the main lake and in some
creeks, and when active were hitting live minnows and cut bait. A
mixture of sizes of crappie were on wood cover on deep flats and on
channel edges in the main lake and were slightly to moderately active,
mostly hitting live minnows, but also occasionally hitting tubes, curly
tail grubs, small swim baits, small Gulp minnows, and wet flies. White
perch and a few yellow perch were scattered or in loose aggregates on
deep flats, channel edges, and in channels in the main lake and in a few
creeks, and when active were hitting small baits including live minnows,
Gulp minnows, and swim baits. Moderate numbers of bluegills and a few
shellcrackers were on main lake shorelines and flats during early
mornings and were moderately active, hitting wet flies and live worms.
Some pickerel and largemouth bass were around cypress trees, on flats,
and on channel edges in the main lake. Other bass and pickerel were in
channels, on flats, or near shoreline cover in major creeks. When
active, bass and pickerel were hitting live minnows, spinnerbaits, swim
baits, stick worms, crank baits, and jerk baits.
Fishing with Art Conway, Jerry Davis had 22 bluegills, 4 shellcrackers,
1 channel cat, and 2 largemouth bass, all on fly rods. David Ross had
17 crappies, 8 white perch, and 1 blue cat. Tom Porter and Sandra
Rothrock had 13 bluegills, 1 shellcracker, 4 crappies, 5 white perch,
and 1 largemouth bass.
