Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water temperatures were in the high 60’s in the lower main lake and ranging to the low to mid 70’s up the creeks on Wednesday (05/07/2014). The lake level was about two feet above the top of the dam and dropping. The water was medium brown and slightly cloudy in the central lower lake.
Blue cats were scattered throughout the lake and up the creeks. Moderate numbers of small to medium crappie were in the channels and along edge cover in the major creeks and on mid-depth wood cover in the main lake. Crappie were hitting live minnows, small tubes, Kalin crappie scrubs, Wright Bait Co. curly-tail grubs, and small swim baits. Some bass were around shoreline cover and a few pickerel were on mid-depth flats and in the main channels in the major creeks and were hitting live minnows, stick worms, small swim baits, and suspending jerk baits. A few yellow perch, bluegill, shellcracker, and flier were wandering in the creeks and were hitting live minnows and small jigs.
Fishing with Capt. Conway, Jim Anderson and Tom Hinrichsen had 23 crappie and 1 bluegill. John Smith had 30 crappie, 1 cat, and 1 pickerel. Irving and Scott Wright had 26 crappie and 1 bluegill. Capt. Bill Buck and Tom Porter had 8 bluegill, 1 flier, 1 shellcracker, and 10 crappie.
