Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water temperatures were in the low to mid 60’s in the lower main lake and in the mid 60’s in the major creeks on Wednesday (04/23/2014). The lake level was about a foot above the top of the dam. The water was medium brown and relatively clear in the central lower lake.
Blue cats were scattered throughout the lake and up the creeks. Moderate numbers of small to medium crappie were in the channels of the major creeks and on mid-depth wood cover in the main lake. Crappie were hitting live minnows, Kalin crappie scrubs, Wright Bait Co. curly-tail grubs, small swim baits, and small suspending jerkbaits. Some bass were around shoreline cover and a few pickerel were on mid-depth flats and in the main channels in the major creeks and were hitting live minnows, stick worms, small swim baits, and suspending jerk baits. A few yellow perch, bluegill, shellcracker, and flier were wandering in the creeks and were hitting live minnows and small jigs.
Fishing with Capt. Conway, Norma Hall and Jimmy Marable had 16 crappie and 1 bass. Tom and Dalton Luffey had 40 crappie, 1 white perch, 1 yellow perch, and 1 pickerel. Capt. Bill Buck and Malcolm Turnbull had 5 bluegill, 12 crappie, and 1 pickerel.
