Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water temperatures were in the mid to high 30’s in the lower lake on Wednesday (02/05/2014). The lake level was about a foot above the top of the dam. The water was very light brown and very slightly cloudy in the central lower lake. Most of the ice was gone from the lower end of the main lake by Wednesday afternoon, with shoreline ice remaining in some areas. The upper ends of the major creeks were ice-free, but could not be accessed from the lake because the lower reaches of the creeks were still ice-covered. The main lake was ice-covered from Jeff’s Landing up as far as I could see.
Lower lake winter holes contained mostly blue cats with a few crappie, bowfin, pickerel, white perch, and bass. Fish were hitting live minnows and blade baits, but were not very active.
