Capt. Art Conway of Conway’s River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of
Ed Allen’s Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water
temperatures were in the low 80’s in the lower lake and in the low to mid
80’s up some of the creeks on Wednesday. The lake level was about even with
the top of the dam and the water was stained in the lower lake and slightly
muddy in the upper lake and upper ends of some creeks. Moderate numbers of
bluegill, and a few white perch and crappie and some nice yellow perch were
in lower and mid-regions of the major creeks. Bluegill were scattered along
the shoreline and yellow perch, white perch, blue cats, and crappie were
widely scattered over the shallow to mid-depth flats in the lower and middle
regions of the main lake. Bass were in weeds (especially lily pads) and
around wood cover in the creeks and in the main lake. Wright Bait Co. and
Southern Pro one and two inch curly tail grubs, tubes, small swim baits, and
live minnows have been the most effective baits for bluegill, perch, and
crappie. Bass have been hitting topwater lures just before and after
sunrise, and stickbaits, swim baits, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits later in
the morning. Fishing with Capt. Conway, Malcolm Turnbull had 35 bluegill, 1
shellcracker, 6 crappie, 2 yellow perch, 1 white perch, 1 shiner, and 3
bass.
